Get Pattern

There are many different fabrics to choose from and a variety of ways to adapt them to this project. When choosing paper or fabric for your Friendship Forever-Plant, you have many options.

We have found that Kraft-Tex Paper Fabric is the best choice for making plants. Kraft-Tex Paper Fabric works well for plant leaves since it is durable and thick enough to look like a realistic plant. Watercolor, acrylic paint, and pastels can be used to color the leaves, so you can create a plant the exact color you want. Paper fabric is great for using Panpastels to color the leaves since the surface texture helps to keep pastels from flaking off. With watercolor and acrylic paint, allow drying time between each application of color. Paper fabric can be used with your cutting machine if you have a high tack or strong tack cutting mat.

Cardstock is another good choice for plant leaves. It is readily available and easy to use with printers and cutting machines. It is also easy to glue. Pastels tend to flake off of cardstock easily, so you may want to use colored pencils or acrylic paint instead. You can make reusable templates out of cardstock. To make a reusable template, print the PDF templates onto cardstock, label each part, and cut out the template pieces. These reusable templates can be traced onto the paper or fabric of your choice. They can be used over and over again.

If you cut pattern pieces out by hand, Kraft-Tex Paper Fabric, cardstock, felt, vinyl, cork fabric, faux leather, and other non-fraying fabrics can all be used. Choose a glue that works well with your fabric and test it on a small sample before you start your project. If you have a non-woven fabric that frays or tends to stretch, you may still be able to use it with this project. You can use fusible interfacing to stabilize the fabric and keep it from fraying.

Depending on the type of fabric you choose, you may want to glue multiple layers of fabric together, to make a thicker leaf. Quilting cotton can be used if two layers of fabric are prepared with a layer of Heat’nBond ultra-hold iron-on adhesive. It works exceptionally well on cotton fabric and the glue keeps the fabric from fraying along the edge of the leaves. Other fabrics that tend to fray may also be used this way, as long as the iron will not damage them.

Follow the instructions on the packaging to attach two layers of fabric with Heat’nBond. Since this process uses an iron to heat the adhesive layer, it may not work for certain fabrics. Please note that some fabrics may melt with the iron. Try a test with a smaller piece of fabric to see if you can get it to work. Protect your iron and ironing surface with baking paper or a pressing cloth.

When choosing a planter for your Friendship Forever-Plant, you can get creative. Plant pots with a face on them are usually a fun choice. You can also use a planter in your favorite color or one that matches your home decor. If you are giving the plant as a gift, you can use a planter that reminds you of your friend.

Gift a Forever-Plant in a container that your friend will love. The more thoughtful the item, the better. If your friend loves plants, a watering can or bonsai pot may be the perfect container for their friendship plant. Is coffee their beverage of choice?
